| Bio: | Biography : NEW ALTUM: New Altum is a post hardcore experimental alternative rock band that was birthed in April 2005 & has been going for just under 3 years now. The band hails from the very diverse & windswept city of Cape Town South Africa & more specifically, residing on the coast of Blaaubergstrand in the Table View area. The name "Altum" is from Latin origin which means "Depth", so basically "New Depth". The name itself isn't just for trying to be different sake but rather a moral standing in each one of their lives. Their goal is to try their utmost in going deeper in their moral values as well as pushing harder to squeeze every ounce of musical creativity out of themselves and also, to raise the standard of a humility verses "Rock Star" attitude! Their individual aspirations wouldn’t be much different from one another, but as a band their main aspiration is to be a positive influence!. Music is a vessel....for them."A vessel of Hope". To be a positive influence in a negative world comes with it's trials, troubles and conflicts!, but for them still a small price to pay knowing that they’ve made a difference in even just one person's life. The songs they write about is predominantly about life experiences, ups 'and' downs but always points to a hopeful solution. There’s so much hurt, anger and sorrow in the world that if people were to rather focus on the good things in their life as oppose to the bad, it would be like a candle in a dark room. New Altum was started by a friendly chat between Jacques’ Barnard & Rash Ferguson. Soon what started out as a vision quickly transformed itself and forced it's way into reality. Before they knew it all the band members were quickly assembled and bouncing ideas and vision around. Since then they’ve had the 'always' unfortunate task of changing band members but are still humbly grateful for the time and effort they put in. The band at the moment is currently, Rash Ferguson on vocals, Rob Shaw on bass, Matt Duminy on guitar, Nic Fagg on guitar and Nic Smal on drums. All the members are X-members of previous bands as well. Rash was part of 5 Star Society, Rob was part of One Way Out, Matt was with Proxy, Nic S was part of Serving Suggestion & Nic F was part of Enthused. As far as “sound” goes, they don’t try and go for a particular sound when they write music but rather concentrate on freedom of expression. They feel as they do that they end up developing their own sound anyway. They do try and create a good balance between melody and heaviness (Screaming) vocally. Good selling points on the band are definitely their merchandise, presentation of logos (corporate identification) and also the use of samples during performances mixed with energetic stage presence & attire. They believe in the entire production and not just the music. “People want to be entertained at the end of the day” , so they try and hit as many of the senses as they can. New Altum states & I quote… “Hopefully our audience will feel like they’ve experienced something after a show and not just heard something”.
