yowzit! New on the forum and was rather surprised to actually find a site like this on Essay pages?! Was rad nevertheless. and YIP, i feel that if only half of all the people that have dreams about doing something in the Christian music scene (or anything in life for that matter) just commit themselves and actually DO IT, great things will be happen, but Satan is the father of lies and unfortunately we believe the lies," there are so many others out there, who didn't make it, why would I?" or "there's no following for Christian rock/metal or whatever scene" OR "where am I going to find the time/the bassist/ the whatever". Personally, I would LOVE to have my own or be part of a DRUM N BASS Christian band!! WOW! Anyone out there with A LOT of patience, who is willing to teach me drums or bass, hit me up! ? Big Up to all the bands who rox out for Christ! Xx
I wanna leave you with "Test Me in this, if I don't open up heavens it self to you and pour out blessings beyond your wildest dreams" ?

Yo Chris...Exciting stuff man!!! I hope that the scene doesn't disappoint you in any way, it might have the potential but I think you'll find that there is definately something worthy within the scene. Those guys who are going to make life easy and those who will make it hard...

I think from my side the best advice I can give you is search the directory and come into contact with some of the christian bands and see what they're all about. The best way to read the scene is to read the people who are the ones creating the scene...

I play in a small band called Ar-Khay, you can find us(among many other christian artists) on myspace or facebook and get into direct contact with them that way...

I hope you get welcomed with open arms and I hope the scene has something to offer you that you never had before...

Blessings

Great to find a site and a forum on SA Christian Bands ... I hope this site picks up and gets really active.

Oh sorry, I'm Chris, newly reborn (4 years since Christ Jesus first saved and washed my sins), not new to music though, been in the industry since 1991 as muso, trainer & producer for labels. (It is a part of my old live that I would like to forget ... until a month ago).

I was approuched by a young girl to help her with her album, in an attempt to brush her off I just said that I have found Jesus and will not go near any music (or band) that does not exclusively praise his name in their music. Now this usually works on most muso's, they ussually just run, but I now believe the Lord has other plans for me, cause this girl (Janet) said that she wants to change everything in her life and making music was one of the steps toward that change ... and really getting to know Jesus was another.

OK, here I am, 4 years out of an industry I used to know (and do not want to know) and stepping into an Christian music industry I do not know, all I do know is that I have to do this.

So ... any advice, tips, warnings etc. please

Like I said from the technical, music and production side I'm fine. I just need to know Industry details (where & who) etc. (maybe, I can help in return)

I like this thread...Honestly, music is beyond anything I've ever experienced in my life, God works through music, He moves when theres music, He made music and He loves music...Not that music is the be all and end all of God but Jesus himself sang hyms with His friends, in fellowship...As christian bands, whether we make it huge, just big, or we don't quite make it at all, if we've started and percevered(bad spelling) with our focus and intentions where they should be, we'll realize that God has made a way for us, music isn't just a hobby, or a job, or a money making scheme, its a ministry...One of the most effective and well accepted ministries IF we put our effort and time into GOD!!!! The music should be a byproduct of our relationship with Christ, and I believe that God has big plans for those die hard bands that stick out past their first three weekends, there is a future in christian music in SA, we as bands just need to embrace the blessing God has poured out on us...

That's our ten cents worth...

I think the best christian band as far as secular market goes is POD, they market themselves as a secular band, and say that their lyrics are about life, but its full-out preaching! The thing is, when asked about their faith, they NEVER compromise, from the start they were and still are outspoken christians and they give God the glory for their success. Maby we can learn something from that... hehe, but heck, what do I know!

I've just come back from Just Jesus 08, SA's number one Christian music festival.

Shaun (Worm) from The Finkelsteins gave a fascinating talk on how they chose to try and be a "Christian" band without using the name of God in their songs, including a ban on playing in churches! After 5 years, a pastor spoke to him about it and he was really convicted. Looking back after 5 years, he realised how cold they had become and how they even turned down the simple opportunities to chat with people after shows.

Being a Christian band is a tough, tough business, I wouldn't criticise any band that starts up and gets surprised by the hardness of the road. However, to be a band of Christians who just make music and try only to "live the life" is ducking under the bushes. The Bible says: "How can they believe unless they have heard?"

I think that many young guys (and girls, to be p.c.) have this dream of being in a band. So they start a band, and then kind of incorperate their faith into it, instead of first even seeing if a band is what God wants for them. So although they are 'giving their talent to God' they haven't considered whether being part of a band is REALLY what God wants for them. So then technically they are not following God's direct will for their life so naturally that 'music' door will close, even if only for while. So if their actions are not totally what God wants, it generally won't work out to be a lasting thing.
On the other hand, if a SA christian band were to emerge totally out of God's will and blessing for them, then naturally that 'industry contribution' would be blessed with covenant values, creativity, innovation, etc. At the moment i'm feeling dissapointed with Christian Music in general, because it seems like many artists just work within the 'Christian Music Box' instead of exercising God-given creativity etc. So to all budding Christian musicians, i'm looking forward to some blessed innovation!

OK im not going to be too negative now. The sites doing good and God is great! But one of the biggest problems I encounter in our SA christian bands, is that they are there for three weekends and five minutes and then dissappear from the face of the earth, espesially the upcoming young bands. We serve a everlasting God who believes in covenant and lasting relationship. So why is this happening? Kids in school see these bands and look up to them as their mentors and then the bands break up and there is no-one left to look up to. How come this keep happening? Any thoughts?

Absolutely, I mean if we're serving a God of creativity and innovation, and if we're made in his image, then surely Christians should be inspiring leaders in new, creative things? So if we all take a stand we can have a Christian Music Army, a Christian Design Army... the list goes on Exciting stuff

You know I gave that question a bit of thought, and my conclusion was this... NOWHERE!!! With my research for christianbands.co.za I realized something that was shocking, the general christianband in South Africa sucks, most christianbands dont have a website or even an email address, I mean come on! Christians need to stop trying to do something for God and need to start FIGHTING, we are supposed to be the best of the best! We are supposed to be excelent! This is a call to all christians in South Africa, If we dont start actually being the light of the world and the city on the hill like Jesus told us the Devil will keep stepping on us instead of us stepping on him like we are ment to (Rom. 16:19). Dont get me wrong, im a optimist, and I support everything christian, but we need to start working together and start fighting for excellence or nothing will change. Some people get things right and I like and support that. Check out http://www.streetcalledstraight.co.za for example, its a cool youth christian website
