The Metanoya Rockonfusion Interview

SOURCE:  www.sonsurf.co.za

Q: Who is the band?
A: Eben Kok - plays the drums Jaun "Wolfve" Hugo - plays lead guitar and sings Morkel Erasmus - plays rhythm guitar and sings

Q: What do you stand for?
A: Righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Ghost (The Bible says that whoever seeks these things will inherit the Kingdom). We basically stand on the faith that the presence of God has the power to change a life completely, therefor we strive to bring people into His presence. So, essentially we are a worship band, but with a different edge and approach.

Q: How did you get your name?
A: Looooooooooong story. Hehe. But we'll give you the short version. The word METANOYA is a wrong spelling of the Greek word "metonia" which means "renewal of the mind" as described in Romans 12:1-3. The ROCKONFUSION part is just our way of saying "fused on the Rock" which is our way of saying "one with Christ" which is our way of saying...

Q: How long have you been together?
A: Since mid-2001 ... so we are almost 5 years old now.

Q: What are your favourite extreme sports?
A: Doing a gig without hurting ourselves ... hahahaha ... just kidding. We dig all kinds of rad sports even thoughy we don't really take part in them (delicate musician's limbs, you know?). I guess we all play paintball?? Or is that painball?? And Wolfve likes to play with his huge radio-controlled off-roader.

Q: What was the last thing you ate?
A: Eben - A real life coconut, juice and fibre and all. Wolfve - A rabbit ... raw. Morkel - Sand ... cause the other 2 pounded me into the dirt.

Q: Do you think guys should wear pink?
A: Eben - No ... are you mad? Wolfve - I think it is raffa in a jaffa ... Morkel - Some guys look very suspect in pink. You gotta be WAY straight if you don't wann look ... well ... not straight.

Q: What message are you trying to create with your music?
A: Godly music is the only music.

Q: What style of music would you classify yourselves as?
A: Eben - Rhythmicano. Wolfve - Soloristicano. Morkel - Okay just label it as heavy alternative melodic rock with a lot of diversity from song to song.

Q: What are some of your influences?
A: Eben - Blink182, Green Day, Carter Beauford, P.O.D, Just Jinger, Live, U2, System of a Down, Bon Jovi. Wolfve - DC Talk, Steve Vai, The Narrow, MIC, Metallica, Alphaville, Bon Jovi, Live, System of a Down. Morkel - Delirious, DC Talk, Lifehouse, Collective Soul, Live, U2, John Mayer, Bon Jovi, Dave Matthews, Jars of Clay, Jason Upton, Switchfoot.

Q: What equipment do you use of endorse?
A: Eben - I play DW Pacific drums, Zildjian cymbals (cause there aren't any other), Pro Orca sticks and Pearl Eliminator pedals. Wolfve - I use Ibanez guitars (a 7 string Universe and a 7 string RG and a BSB777 Jem), Peavy and Marshall amps and BOSS effects pedals and use Shure microphones. Morkel - I use a Gibson Les Paul Studio model, Peavy and Marshall amps, BOSS effects pedals and Shure microphones.

Q: Do you have any albums people can buy?
A: Our debut studio album "This is why" has just been released and is available nationwide in music shops. It contains 13 tracks, a hidden track as well as a music video. Some of our songs are already rotating on most Christian and Secular radio stations in this country. We are hoping to get some airplay in countries abroad very soon. Otherwise we also have a single that is almost sold out, only available at gigs.

Q: What do you guys do besides the band?
A: Eben - I've got a Bachelors in Informatics and work at a company called Digital Media Services. And I give drumming lessons. Wolfve - I've got my own studio (where we also record albums) and I give guitar lessons, both personally and on a monthly DVD. Morkel - I'm currently in my final year of my Bachelors in Industrial Engineering (don't ask - suffice to say I dig it and it's not about building cars but more about business and its processes).

Q: Do you gig a lot?
A: Yes, often and frequently and as much as we can. We are essentially a live band. The CD's are cool and we're very proud of them, but they only offer you a taste of the real experience of worshipping God with us. We are on the verge of going full-time (Morkel has to finish his studies), so strongly do we feel about our calling. We are embarking on a nationwide tour early next year so check the website for details (http://www.metanoyarock.com/)

Q: If somebody wants to book you guys?
A: You can either do it by mailing info@metanoyarock.com or phoning Chirize on 0845135653
